Ciro Rodriguez Abusing Political No-Call Exemption

Leila Walsh at WOAI explains how Ciro Rodriguez is making large quantities of automated political phone calls to unwilling recipients, even after the election has ended:

SAN ANTONIO - The election may be over, but that hasn’t stopped the automated phone calls from politicians. So one man here is using youtube.com to try to keep politicians from bugging him at home.

“In San Antonio, Ciro D. Rodriguez is the epicenter for obnoxious calls,” said Larry Stewart.

Stewart got two to three political calls a day during the campaign season and went off when he got one more this week. It was an automated message from Congressman Rodriguez, thanking voters for supporting his re-election.

“I called his office about ten times yesterday in the space of 15 minutes to let them know what it’s like to get obnoxious phone calls,” said Stewart.

Now, Stewart is taking his fight a step further. Wednesday night, he posted a clip on youtube.com. If features a stuffed monkey. Stewart argues politicians are making monkeys out of the voters until they demand an end to all the political calls.

“When they enacted the do-not call laws, they conveniently exempted themselves,” said Stewart. “It’s just another example of how politicians wipe their feet on their constituents. They really don’t care if we’re inconvenienced.”

A spokesman for Rodriguez couldn’t say whether the congressman would support a ban on political calls. He did tell us said the campaign will gladly remove names of people who don’t want to receive Rodriguez’ calls.

News 4 has learned there is a national effort designed to put pressure on lawmakers to add political calls to the existing do not call registry. So, far it only has the support of one member of congress.

As of this writing, Ciro Rodriguez has not signed on to the effort to include political calls in the do not call registry.

I find the follow-up Thank You phone call after the election particularly obnoxious.  I did not and would never vote for Mr. Rodriguez, and would be offended if he called my house thanking me for his re-election.

Let’s make sure this guy does NOT get re-elected in 2010.
